Romantic Masterpieces Bring Drama and Joy to Ripon Cathedral

Filmogaz.com reports that the St Cecilia Orchestra will perform at Ripon Cathedral on Saturday, April 25.

Conductor Xen Kelsey will lead the programme. Soloists are violinist Jack Liebeck and cellist Tim Lowe.

Programme highlights

The concert opens with the overture to Weber’s opera Oberon. That overture received its first performance on April 12, 1826.

The evening also features Brahms’ Double Concerto for violin and cello. This piece is Brahms’ final orchestral work.

Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7

The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. It was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Society.

The symphony draws on Slavonic melodies and national feeling. It builds to an exuberant, triumphant ending.

Soloists and conductor

Jack Liebeck is an internationally recognised violinist. Critics have praised his technical command and distinctive, silvery tone.

He has contributed to film soundtracks such as Jane Eyre, Anna Karenina, and The Theory of Everything. Two concertos have been written for him.

Tim Lowe is an in-demand cellist known for agility and a bold sound. He described performing Brahms with Liebeck and Kelsey as a powerful, warm experience.

Conductor Xen Kelsey will lead the St Cecilia Orchestra in these Romantic masterpieces. The performances aim to bring drama and joy to the cathedral.
