Auburn Launches Speaker Series Featuring Condoleezza Rice, Margaret Hoover
Auburn University opened its America250 speaker series with a public conversation between Condoleezza Rice and Margaret Hoover. The program took place at the Gogue Performing Arts Center on March 30, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Event overview
The occasion was part of America250, a yearlong effort marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. The initiative features events on democracy, civic life and national history.
Admission to the talk was free, with tickets available by reservation. The session carried the theme “Democracy in Dialogue.”
Opening ceremony
The program began with a flag presentation and the national anthem. The Auburn University Singers performed the anthem and a short excerpt from Hamilton.
University President Christopher Roberts introduced the series and outlined its goals. Advisory Council Endowed Professor Kerry Inger and Morris Savage Endowed Chair Steven Brown then introduced the speakers.
Conversation highlights
The discussion opened with a question about the “American idea.” Rice framed that idea around self-government and self-determination.
She argued the nation’s founding creed binds citizens, not ethnicity or religion. Rice said that spirit of revolution continues to shape civic life.
Rice noted contemporary challenges such as war, economic shifts and rapid technology. She emphasized that durable institutions help democracies endure and adapt.
Hoover described the country’s ongoing effort to form a “more perfect union.” Both speakers agreed democracies demand constant care and civic effort.
Rice stressed the role of education in preserving democratic habits. She urged universities to encourage engagement with differing viewpoints and to develop leadership skills.
For those seeking greater civic participation, Rice recommended studying issues, staying informed and joining campaigns or civic organizations. The message emphasized practical steps toward involvement.
Closing
Before departing the stage, Rice and Hoover exchanged a cordial embrace. Student Government Association President Owen Beaverstock delivered closing remarks.
The Auburn University Singers concluded with the Auburn Alma Mater. Attendees were directed to the America250 website for more information.
