Cooper Flagg Sets NBA Record as Youngest to Score 50 Points
Cooper Flagg scored 51 points Friday in a 138-127 loss to the Orlando Magic at the American Airlines Center. He became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 50-point mark. The Mavericks suffered their 14th straight home defeat.
Performance and milestones
Flagg finished 19-of-30 from the field. He sank six 3-pointers and totaled 51 points.
At 19 years and 103 days, Flagg established a new NBA record by becoming the youngest player to score 50 points. He surpassed his own teenage high of 49 points from Jan. 29 against the Charlotte Hornets.
Fourth-quarter burst
Flagg had 27 points entering the fourth quarter. He erupted for 24 points in the final frame.
He briefly left the game with 45 points when the Mavericks trailed by 17 with 3:35 left. He returned 13 seconds later and quickly added six points. A right-corner 3 and a late and-1 took him past 50.
Coach reaction and officiating controversy
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd was ejected with 10:45 remaining. He left the court after disputing a missed foul on Flagg.
Kidd criticized the officiating and contended Flagg was fouled multiple times on the play. Flagg agreed with his coach and said he spoke to Desmond Bane afterward. Bane admitted he intended to foul, according to Flagg.
Context and season implications
The loss dropped Dallas to 24-53 with five games left in the regular season. Fans gave Flagg a loud ovation as he exited with about two minutes remaining.
Flagg now has three games of 40 or more points this season. No other rookie has reached 40, including Hornets guard Kon Knueppel.
