Firefighters Combat 4,000-Acre Wildfire Near Florida-Georgia Border

A fast-moving wildfire has scorched nearly 4,000 acres along the Florida-Georgia border, officials said. The blaze, known locally as the “Sergeant Fire,” produced large plumes of smoke visible from Waycross.

Location and size

Authorities reported the fire affecting parts of Ware, Clinch, Columbia and Baker counties. Firefighters say the blaze expanded rapidly across dry terrain. The incident report lists the burned area at about 4,000 acres.

Road closures and visibility concerns

Heavy smoke prompted multiple road closures in both states. The Florida Highway Patrol closed all lanes on State Road 2 in Sanderson.

The Georgia Department of Transportation also shut both lanes of State Road 94 southbound at Main Pasture Road. Motorists were urged to avoid the area until visibility improved.

Threat to homes and public safety

The Florida Forestry Service said no homes were immediately threatened. Local officials advised residents to monitor emergency channels for evacuation orders.

Smoke and visibility remain primary hazards for nearby communities. Officials reminded the public to stay clear of closed routes.

Response and containment efforts

Firefighters from multiple agencies are working to contain the fire. State forestry crews, local fire departments and law enforcement coordinated response efforts.

Air and ground resources were deployed to slow the fire’s advance. Teams focused on establishing containment lines and protecting populated areas.
