Minnesota Vikings Quarterbacks Highlighted at NFL Owners Meetings

Filmogaz.com attended meetings at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix where Minnesota Vikings leaders spoke to local reporters on Monday. Co-owner Mark Wilf, head coach Kevin O’Connell and interim general manager Rob Brzezinski addressed the club’s plans for the coming season. Quarterbacks were the dominant topic throughout.

Murray’s fit in O’Connell’s offense

O’Connell said Kyler Murray can operate in rhythm as well as on highlight plays. He pointed to specific film examples, including a precise completion to Trey McBride. The coach plans to blend more shotgun, offset shotgun and pistol concepts into the offense.

Staff expect to marry those formations with a complementary ground game. They do not plan a wholesale move away from under-center work. Wilf said Murray expressed clear championship motivation when they first spoke.

J.J. McCarthy’s development

Ownership and coaches voiced confidence in 23-year-old J.J. McCarthy’s future. Wilf called McCarthy talented and optimistic about his trajectory after a tumultuous 2025 season. McCarthy worked this offseason with private coach John Beck on layering throws and refining footwork.

He has returned to Minnesota and spent time at the TCO Performance Center with strength and conditioning staff. Coaches cannot work with him on-field yet, but O’Connell emphasized consistency and competitive daily habits as the key focus.

Quarterback room and offseason plan

Brzezinski said the team was pleased to add veteran Carson Wentz. He also highlighted second-year signal-caller Max Brosmer and described the group as a strong room. The front office expects the competitive environment to push all players to improve.

Reps and evaluation

O’Connell outlined a cautious, phased approach to offseason reps. Early work will focus on footwork and timing with all quarterbacks throwing to the full receiver group during routes-on-air segments. There will be a later, defined period for counting individual throws.

The Vikings retained Wentz after seeing him run the system without camp reps in 2025. That provides roster flexibility this fall. Murray could open with the first team while McCarthy follows an individualized plan tailored to his growth.

Quarterbacks coach Josh McCown will monitor day-to-day progress. O’Connell plans joint practices and preseason games to gauge each player’s baseline. The organization believes a competitive quarterback room will lift the entire roster.
