‘Star City’ to Offer a Fresh Take, Setting It Apart from ‘For All Mankind’

For All Mankind has been renewed for a sixth and final season. Its fifth season premieres Friday, March 27.

The series’ creative team is also launching a spinoff called Star City. A new teaser trailer has already been released.

Creative origins and approach

Filmogaz.com joined a group of press on a set visit in Los Angeles, California. Showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi discussed both series.

They noted a key difference between the two programs. Apollo-era history is well documented, while the Soviet program remains murkier.

The creators said that scarcity of public facts is an advantage. That allowed the writers to offer a fresh take, setting it apart from For All Mankind.

Setting and narrative structure

Star City is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It follows cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers inside the Soviet Union.

The show adopts a Cold War spy-thriller tone behind the Iron Curtain. It stays within the 1970s era and avoids decade-long time jumps.

Writers described season-to-season continuity as intentional. Season two would pick up where season one leaves off, rather than covering long gaps.

Tone, genre, and production

The creative team wanted the spinoff to feel distinct. They aimed for a different look, feel, and genre from the parent show.

That choice reduces reliance on extensive makeup and prosthetics. It also narrows the story to a continuous arc over multiple episodes.

Cast and crossover expectations

Rhys Ifans is among the cast announced for Star City. Other performers portray Soviet-era figures drawn into the space race.

Wolpert and Nedivi said crossover elements will be minimal. A few familiar names may appear, but most connections will be Easter eggs.

The goal is for new viewers to enjoy Star City on its own terms. Fans of For All Mankind should still find satisfying links to the original world.

Release and scheduling

Star City debuts on Apple TV on May 29. That date coincides with the season five finale of For All Mankind.

The showrunners said production on the sixth and final season begins very soon. Star City will tell the Soviet side of the same alternate history world.
