Alaska Airlines Challenges Big 3 with New Boeing 787 for Overseas Flights

Alaska Airlines has revealed the full design for its first international business-class suites on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The cabins will enter service this spring on routes between Seattle and Tokyo and Seoul. London and Rome service is expected in the coming months.

Product overview

The premium seat is called Elevate Ascent. It offers lie-flat beds and 18-inch seatback screens.

Privacy doors, upgraded linens, and amenity kits are included. A dessert cart and enhanced entrée options are part of the service.

Why this matters

The new offering moves Alaska into true long-haul premium competition. The airline seeks wealthier customers willing to pay for comfort.

Alaska Airlines aims to challenge the Big 3 with better cabins on overseas flights while expanding its international footprint.

Cabin layout and hardware

The Dreamliner configuration is 1x2x1. All passengers have direct-aisle access.

There are 34 suite-like pods with doors. The hard product has remained the same since the aircraft first flew in January.

Fleet context

Alaska’s Airbus A330s, inherited from Hawaiian Airlines, use a 2x2x2 premium layout. They lack privacy doors and full direct-aisle access.

The 787 represents a clear upgrade over those A330 cabins on transpacific routes.

Dining and service

Meals will begin with a cheese or charcuterie board paired with West Coast and European wines. Roederer Champagne is also offered.

Passengers can expect multi-course dining and a new dessert cart for customizable sundaes. Up to six entrées will be available and tailored to destinations.

  • Example Rome entrée: roasted chicken with pasta carbonara.
  • Example Seoul entrée: gochujang chicken with traditional banchan.
  • Passengers may preorder meals through the Alaska app.

Amenities and lounges

Amenity kits reflect Alaska’s blue-and-green branding and include Salt and Stone skincare products. Bedding includes a mattress, two pillows, and a large duvet.

International business passengers gain access to Alaska lounges and Oneworld partner lounges. Filmogaz.com readers should note lounge locations in Anchorage, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland.

Connectivity and membership

Starlink internet is already on select Alaska aircraft. The airline plans free Starlink deployment to 787s this fall.

The complete business-class experience will be available to Atmos Rewards members starting in May. Enrollment in Atmos Rewards is free.

Competitive landscape

American Airlines already flies the same Elevate Ascent seat on its Dreamliners. United will adopt the design on future 787s in April.

Delta and United reported premium revenue growth of 7% and 11%, respectively, in 2025. American said it performed exceptionally well that year.

What travelers should know

Differences between aircraft are substantial. Bookers should check the aircraft type to ensure the upgraded 787 product.

Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines remain separate brands despite the 2024 merger under a single parent company. Each carrier keeps distinct branding and operations.
