How Connections works
Connections is a daily word puzzle on the New York Times Games platform. Each puzzle presents 16 words or phrases. Players must sort them into four groups of four.
There are three incorrect guesses allowed. A fourth wrong guess ends the round. Players can share results with an emoji-based grid.
Hints for Wednesday’s puzzle
Kris Holt shared four color-coded hints for the April 1 puzzle. Each hint pointed toward one of the four groups.
- Yellow hint: a cold one on a hot day.
- Green hint: stars with guitars.
- Blue hint: many still images projected rapidly with matching audio.
- Purple hint: big pineapple, beantown and B-more fit here.

Holt offered one example from each group to help solvers. Those examples made the categories clearer.
- Yellow example: RED STRIPE.

- Blue group — movies: BACK TO THE FUTURE, BLUE VELVET, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, TOP GUN.
- Purple group — U.S. city nicknames: BIG APPLE, BIG EASY, MILE HIGH CITY, SECOND CITY.
Notes on solving
Wordplay and themed clues sometimes act as red herrings. Yellow and green sets often rely on synonyms. Blue and purple sets can draw on pop culture or nicknames.
Holt said MILE HIGH CITY helped him spot the purple set. SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN pointed to the blue answers.
