Diamondbacks Add Fernandez to Roster, Smith Placed on Injured List
The Arizona Diamondbacks made a roster change ahead of their home opener Monday. The club placed first baseman Pavin Smith on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 29, and recalled infield prospect Jose Fernandez.
Injury update on Pavin Smith
The team listed Smith with left elbow inflammation. He had a brief absence during spring training for the same elbow issue.
Smith returned at the end of Cactus League play but was scratched from the Opening Day lineup on Thursday. He served as the designated hitter on Friday and Saturday.
Prospect promotion: Jose Fernandez
The move effectively has the Diamondbacks add Fernandez to roster depth. The 22-year-old infielder is expected to make his major league debut soon.
- Made his Triple-A debut over the weekend.
- Hit three home runs, three doubles, and a triple in 10 Cactus League games.
- Recorded a three-hit performance in the Spring Breakout prospect showcase.
- Posted 17 home runs, 12 stolen bases and a .775 OPS last year at Double-A Amarillo.
- Has defensive experience at all four infield positions.
Fernandez was added to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. The club views him as a versatile, high-upside option.
