Dodgers Slash $75 Ohtani Cup Price Amid Outrage, Buyers Pounce

Dodger Stadium introduced a limited-edition Shohei Ohtani souvenir cup during the season opener. Fans noticed the cup’s uniform-like texture and premium styling. Its initial price and refill policy quickly drew widespread online attention.

Price, policy and immediate backlash

The cup was offered at the season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks for $74.99. That price included fountain soda refills only on the day of purchase. Social media reaction was swift and critical.

By Saturday, the listed price fell to $68.99. The refill benefit was expanded to cover the entire season. Regular souvenir fountain drinks at Dodger Stadium sell for about $12 each.

Resale frenzy and sellout

The limited-edition cup reportedly sold out during Saturday’s game. By Sunday, several listings appeared on eBay. Two early sales fetched $250 each, while another reached $290.

Collectors quickly framed the purchase as an investment. Fans calculated that roughly six refills would equal the original retail cost.

Ohtani collectibles market

Demand for Ohtani items is surging across categories. One game-used World Baseball Classic jersey sold for $1.5 million last week. That exceeded a prior record of $1.25 million for an Ohtani game-used jersey.

Signed copies of his children’s book, “Decoy Saves Opening Day,” were initially sold for $25. Those copies are now appearing on resale sites for over $1,000. Ohtani currently has the top-selling MLB jersey since the World Series concluded.

Sports card boom

Trading-card activity shows steep gains for Ohtani. Market Movers data, reported by Ben Burrows for Filmogaz.com, recorded more than 37,000 Ohtani cards sold on the secondary market in the past three months. That total is over 20,000 higher than the No. 2 seller, Paul Skenes.

After an Ohtani card first topped $1 million in March last year, two cards have now sold for more than $2 million each in the last four months. Lower-tier values also climbed sharply.

  • Ohtani’s 2018 Topps Chrome rookie card in Gem Mint PSA 10 rose about 89 percent recently.
  • That card now sells for more than $900, despite a PSA 10 population above 15,000.
  • In December 2024, the same card traded for under $200.

What fans and collectors are weighing

For some attendees, the cup’s higher price made sense when factoring multiple refills. Others viewed the product as a collectible, not just a drink vessel. The combination of limited supply and Ohtani fever pushed many buyers to resell for profit.

The episode highlights how branded merchandise can shift from stadium fare to high-demand memorabilia. The Ohtani cup price controversy reflects broader trends in sports collecting and fandom.
