FBI to Unveil Afternoon Update on Temple Israel Investigation

Federal agents in Detroit said the March attack at Temple Israel was inspired by Hezbollah ideology. The FBI described the incident as an act of terrorism aimed at the Jewish community.

Official briefing

FBI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyan led a Monday afternoon press conference. She said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon said prosecutors found the suspect knew Hezbollah was a terrorist organization. He added the suspect provided material support and acted under that group’s direction and control.

Timeline of preparations

Investigators traced the suspect’s online activity back to January 2026. Those searches included pro‑Hezbollah outlets and Iranian news channels.

On March 9, the suspect attempted to buy weapons from two people. He then purchased an AR‑style rifle with 10 magazines and roughly 300 rounds of .223 ammunition.

Agents say he researched local fireworks vendors while also viewing Jewish web pages across Michigan. That same period included reconnoitering possible targets.

On March 10, he searched terms such as “largest gathering of Israelis in Michigan.” He visited a shooting range that afternoon and bought about $2,200 in fireworks.

Social media and motive

On March 11, the suspect uploaded images to a Facebook album he named “vengeance.” The album contained images of Iran’s former supreme leader and photos of deceased relatives.

Family members had died in Lebanon, reportedly after an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli Defense Forces said the suspect’s brother was a Hezbollah member.

Final communications before the attack

On the morning of March 12, he posted further images and posts promising retribution. Investigators also recovered messages he sent to his sister in Lebanon.

He sent nearly a dozen videos, including a last message describing plans to target a large Israeli gathering. In that video, he said he had booby‑trapped a vehicle and planned to forcibly enter and shoot attendees.

Runyan said the sister did not view those videos until about an hour after the attack occurred.

Evidence and ongoing work

Federal agents have compiled digital searches, purchases, posts, and direct communications as evidence. Officials continue to review and corroborate each lead.
