Shedeur Sanders Unveils New Jersey Number Following NFL Pro Bowl Season with Browns
Shedeur Sanders will change his jersey number for the 2026 season. The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that he will move from No. 12 to No. 2.
Sanders wore No. 12 as a rookie in Cleveland. He previously used No. 2 at Trinity Christian High School and in college at Jackson State and Colorado.
Why the switch is possible
The number was unavailable last season because receiver DeAndre Carter held it. Carter had a one-year free-agent deal and is no longer on the Browns roster.
With Carter gone, Sanders reclaimed the digit he has long worn. The move restores a familiar look for the quarterback.
No. 2 history with the Browns
No. 2 has produced mixed results in Cleveland. Several players who wore it did not enjoy long-term success.
- DeAndre Carter appeared in four games and recorded no receptions.
- Bailey Zappe used No. 2 in 2024. He played one game, completing 16 of 31 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in a 35-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
- Other quarterbacks to don the number include Johnny Manziel and Tim Couch.
- Amari Cooper remains the most productive Browns player to wear No. 2. He posted consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023 and totaled 14 touchdowns across 32 games.
Sanders aims to change the narrative
Sanders arrives after a Pro Bowl season. He became the first Cleveland quarterback named to the Pro Bowl since Derek Anderson in 2007.
Joe Flacco also earned Pro Bowl recognition in 2025. He spent much of that year with the Cincinnati Bengals after a trade from Cleveland.
2025 performance and outlook
Sanders played eight games in 2025, starting seven. He finished with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns and ten interceptions.
His completion rate was 56.6 percent. There is clear room for growth as he enters year two with the Browns.
