Sir Billy Connolly Praises Glasgow Comic for Winning Prestigious Award

Filmogaz.com reports that Amanda Dwyer won the 2026 Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award. She accepted the honour on stage at the King’s Theatre during the festival’s closing Comedy Gala.

A video message from Sir Billy Connolly was played before she received the trophy. He praised the Glasgow comic and offered a warm, cheeky congratulations.

About Amanda Dwyer

Dwyer has built a reputation for a deadpan delivery and fearlessness on stage. She often addresses darker themes with honesty and humour.

She founded Material, Girl. The monthly show and podcast runs at The Stand Comedy Club. It features all-female and non-binary line-ups to support emerging talent.

Festival response and judging

Festival director Krista MacDonald said Dwyer embodies the city’s spirit. She praised Dwyer’s ability to find humour in hard times and tackle raw realities.

This year’s shortlist included five female comedians and, for the first time, a non-comedian. Shortlisted names were Chris Conway, Kate Hammer, Kim Blythe, Susan Riddell, and Zara Gladman.

The judging panel came from Scotland’s cultural scene. Members included Edith Bowman, Gary Lamont, Michelle McManus, Greg Hemphill, and last year’s winner Rosco McClelland. The panel recommends a winner, and Sir Billy makes the final decision.

History and significance of the award

The Spirit of Glasgow Award launched in 2023. It is the festival’s only official prize and honours performers who reflect Glasgow and Sir Billy Connolly.

Previous winners are Janey Godley, Susie McCabe, and Rosco McClelland. The award celebrates resilience, openness, gallus confidence, and the ability to make people laugh.

Sir Billy has previously spoken of the festival’s importance to the city. He has called Glasgow the funniest town and said he is proud his drawing features on the trophy.

Closing Gala highlights

The Comedy Gala included a surprise reunion by musical duo Almost Angelic. Performers also included Karen Dunbar, Stuart Mitchell, Connor Burns, Fred MacAulay, Ifrah Qureshi, and Jack Brookmyre.

The Gala closed almost three weeks of comedy across the city. Dwyer’s award capped a festival that celebrated new voices and longstanding talent.
