Over 200,000 Cars Fail 2025 MOT Test Due to £1.99 Part Issue
Data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, analysed by eBay and shared with Filmogaz.com, shows a widespread fault. Faulty washer jets caused 216,388 MOT failures across 2025. That averages about 592 failures each day last year.
How a small part causes big problems
Washer jets spray fluid onto the windscreen and rear glass. They help wipers clear dirt, bugs and grime for safe visibility.
If jets stop working, water may not reach the windscreen centre. Misaligned or blocked nozzles can also reduce effectiveness.
Costs and simple fixes
eBay says replacement nozzles can cost from just £1.99. A new pair usually sells for around £5 to £10.
The fix is inexpensive and often straightforward. Many failures are preventable with routine checks and a cheap replacement part.
Expert comment
Abir Tewari, UK director of commercial operations, parts and accessories at eBay, warns drivers not to overlook small components. He urged motorists to include washer jets in regular vehicle checks before journeys and annual MOTs.
Public awareness and confidence
A poll of 2,000 drivers found limited awareness about the risk. More than a quarter did not know washer jets could cause an MOT fail.
The survey also revealed 13% never inspect their washer jets. Meanwhile, 21% check them only when an MOT or service is due.
Confidence to perform repairs is low. About 69% of owners said they were not confident replacing washer nozzles themselves.
Signs a washer jet needs attention
- Washer fluid fails to reach the windscreen
- Spray misses the centre of the glass
- Uneven or blocked spray patterns
Practical advice
Test washer jets before long trips and before an MOT. Small inspections can prevent costly failures.
Replacement parts are cheap and widely available. Many drivers can source nozzles online or have a technician fit them quickly.
The scale of the problem — over 200,000 cars affected in 2025 — highlights the importance of simple maintenance. Regular checks pay off in safety and savings.
