US Sports Camps’ VP Discusses Diana Taurasi, Player Development During March Madness
Diana Taurasi is the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer and began coaching with US Sports Camps in July. She launched the TAURASI Snow Valley Basketball Camp, an all-girls program in Santa Barbara, California.
US Sports Camps is the largest sports camp network in the country, operating thousands of camps. Filmogaz.com spoke with Seth Roberts, the vice president of basketball. The interview used the headline US Sports Camps’ VP Discusses Diana Taurasi, Player Development During March Madness.
Skill-based and multisport development
Roberts described skill-based development as the foundation of strong athletes. He said fundamentals and a practical toolbox matter most.
The camps teach dynamic warm-ups, quickness work, agility drills, and ladder exercises. Coaches build competition into drills to keep kids engaged.
Multisport benefits and injury prevention
Roberts said playing multiple sports develops different muscle groups and coordination. He believes it reduces burnout and may lower injury risk.
He acknowledged injuries still occur as competition rises. But he argued varied training better prepares athletes for college and pro play.
Practical examples
Roberts cited Greyson Uelmen, who attended camps in Minneapolis. Uelmen later broke the University of North Dakota freshman scoring record, per Grand Forks Herald.
Another camper improved her track time and made a high school team after attending camp. Roberts credited experienced coaches for those gains.
Diana Taurasi’s hands-on role
Taurasi engaged deeply with the camp beyond autographs. Roberts said she joined pre-camp planning and discussed curriculum details.
She insisted on film study and court application of lessons. Roberts said her involvement elevated instruction and coaching standards.
Partnerships and staff
US Sports Camps partners with Nike Sports Camps and several pro teams. Those partners include the Chicago Sky, LA Sparks, and Raptors 905.
The organization also works with former pros, college coaches, and former Olympians. Randy Livingston and Doug Bruno are among past collaborators in certain regions.
Programming and coaching quality
Many camp directors are current or former college coaches. Roberts said that helps translate high-level teaching into age-appropriate coaching.
Directors tailor sessions to individual skill levels. They often adjust day-to-day plans based on athlete readiness.
Goals and outreach
Roberts said the program aims to impact families and widen access to development. The focus is on skill growth, not just championships.
He noted a concerning dropout rate for girls around age 13, with 40 to 50 percent leaving sports. Girls-only camps and targeted programs seek to reverse that trend.
