Mets’ Leading Prospect Advances to Low-A St. Lucie for Season Debut
The New York Mets plan to begin the season with 18-year-old Elian Peña at Low-A St. Lucie. The organization is skipping the Complex League and fast-tracking the shortstop after a high-value international signing.
Signing and assignment
Peña signed out of the Dominican Republic in January 2025. The Mets paid a $5 million signing bonus, their largest ever for an international player.
Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reported the assignment on March 28, 2026. The move signals the club’s intent to accelerate his development.
Performance in the Dominican Summer League
Peña posted strong numbers in his first DSL season despite a slow start. He began 0-for-26 but finished with a .292/.421/.528 slash line.
He hit nine home runs and drove in 37 runs across 55 games. Peña also stole 21 bases during the campaign.
His plate discipline stood out. He recorded 36 walks and 36 strikeouts in 221 plate appearances.
Spring training and readiness
Peña impressed during spring camp and the Mets’ Spring Breakout game. He went 1-for-2 with a walk and reached base twice against the Tampa Bay Rays.
One single to right registered a 102 mph exit velocity. He also logged innings at shortstop, showing defensive promise.
Prospect status and timeline
MLB Pipeline lists Peña as the ninth-best prospect in the Mets system. SNY analyst Joe DeMayo ranks him seventh within the organization.
With prospects Carson Benge and Nolan McLean expected to reach the majors this year, Peña could rise into the top five next season. Projections place his major-league debut in 2030, when he would be 22.
His natural position is shortstop. Francisco Lindor currently occupies that role and remains under contract for several years.
In four years, Lindor will be 36 and approaching the final season of his long-term deal. The Peña timeline suggests the Mets may be planning for succession.
What to watch in St. Lucie
Expect Peña to draw attention as the Mets’ leading prospect at Low-A St. Lucie. His season debut will test his contact and plate discipline against full-season pitching.
Power, speed, and defensive actions will be closely monitored. Peña could emerge as a foundational prospect for the Mets into the 2030s.
