Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow Introduces 4 New Elements to DC Movies

James Gunn’s sequel to his 2025 Man of Steel reimagining is shaping up as a major turning point for the DC film slate. Filming will start in Atlanta in April 2026, and the movie is scheduled to open July 9, 2027.

Filmogaz.com reports the cast includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. German actor Lars Eidinger was confirmed last year as Vril Dox, the villain better known as Brainiac. Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart is also set to appear, tying into an HBO project due before the film.

Four franchise firsts

The production brings several live-action milestones to DC movies. These milestones expand the cinematic scope and character interactions in new ways.

Superman and Lex Luthor team up on screen

For the first time in a theatrical film, Superman and Lex Luthor will be forced into an alliance. Gunn has described the story as equally focused on both characters. That balance promises a dual narrative more centered on Luthor than many past Superman films.

Brainiac makes his big-screen debut

Brainiac will appear in a live-action movie for the first time after decades of TV portrayals. The character arrives as Vril Dox, portrayed by Lars Eidinger. In comics, Brainiac is a Coluan intellect who collects knowledge and shrinks cities aboard a skull-shaped warship.

Television versions have appeared before. James Marsters played a Brainiac figure on Smallville, and Blake Ritson portrayed him on Krypton. Neither of those versions reached a theatrical audience.

Lex Luthor’s Warsuit hits cinemas

The film will show Lex Luthor wearing his armored Warsuit on the big screen. That green-and-purple exoskeleton first showed up in Action Comics #544 in 1983. George Pérez helped design the suit for DC’s Super Powers toy line before it entered comic continuity.

The Warsuit has appeared on television as well. CW’s Supergirl featured the armor in 2018, and it surfaced on Superman & Lois. But a live-action film has never yet brought the suit to cinemas.

John Stewart’s first theatrical appearance

Aaron Pierre will portray John Stewart, marking the character’s debut in a live-action movie. John Stewart was created in Green Lantern Vol. 2 #87 in 1971 by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams. The Green Lantern nearly reached film audiences multiple times, but projects were canceled or scenes were cut.

Wayne T. Carr’s Stewart was filmed for Zack Snyder’s Justice League but was removed before release. Other projects, like Justice League: Mortal and Green Lantern Corps, never reached production.

How the pieces connect

Pierre will first appear as Stewart in Lanterns, an HBO series that pairs him with Hal Jordan. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan in that show, which is slated to premiere in August 2026. That timing sets up a natural continuation into the July 2027 film.

Given Brainiac’s cosmic threat, multiple heroes — and even a villain — will need to unite. The scale of the conflict has led some to call the movie akin to a Justice League story. Casting and plot details continue to arrive as production accelerates toward spring 2026.

  • Filming location: Atlanta. Start: April 2026.
  • Release date: July 9, 2027.
  • Main cast: David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Lars Eidinger, Aaron Pierre.
  • Lanterns HBO premiere: August 2026, featuring Kyle Chandler.

Expect the project to highlight four new elements within the franchise. These additions aim to reshape how Superman stories fit into the broader DC cinematic universe. The film’s blend of character focus and cosmic stakes makes it a notable chapter for DC movies and for Superman 2 entries in particular.
