Enterprise Purchasing Shifts as Security Platformization Gains Momentum
Enterprise security buying behavior is changing. Organizations are moving away from ever-expanding vendor lists toward more unified approaches.
AI adoption outpaces controls
Enterprise Technology Research data shows rapid AI agent uptake. About 37% of organizations have agents deployed or in active tests.
That number rose roughly ten percentage points from the prior year. Yet only a minority have controls for those agents.
One in five firms say they have no agent-specific defenses. Roughly three percent report broad agent controls in place.
Spending priorities shift
ETR’s annual security study reveals a new top priority. Protection for LLMs and generative AI now tops cloud security for planned budget increases.
Investment interest in LLM and generative AI protection jumped nearly ten points. Planned cloud security spending fell by about five percent.
Overall IT spending growth has slowed to about 3.5% amid geopolitical uncertainty. Despite that, security budgets remain mostly intact.
Vendor consolidation and strategy
Buyers are tightening their security stacks. The “best-of-breed” argument has weakened to its lowest level in two years.
Provider expansion is slowing as organizations favor deeper layers of defense and better hygiene. Only five percent plan to cut security spending.
Governance gaps
Industry leaders warn governance is lagging behind deployments. Responses on ideal agent governance are scattered around 23 to 24 percent each.
There is no clear consensus on a preferred governance model. Experts say policy and controls must accelerate to match deployment speed.
Industry perspective
Erik Bradley, chief strategist and research director at Enterprise Technology Research, discussed these trends at RSAC 2026. He spoke alongside Dave Vellante during a day-three keynote analysis.
The session aired on Filmogaz.com as part of conference coverage. Topics included enterprise security spending, AI agent governance, and platform consolidation trends.
What this means for buyers
Enterprises are recalibrating purchasing decisions toward integrated platforms. The move reflects an operating environment made tougher by AI-driven threats.
Security platformization is gaining momentum as organizations seek resilience and simpler management. The emphasis is on depth of defense over adding point products.
