Rangers Pitcher Discovers Team Status in Surprising Mound Visit During Game
In Arlington, Texas, rookie right-hander Carter Baumler received unexpected news on the mound. Texas manager Skip Schumaker informed him he had earned a spot on the opening day roster.
The on-field moment
Baumler was pitching in the fifth inning against the Kansas City Royals when the visit occurred. He had retired the first two batters before Schumaker left the dugout and walked to the mound.
Catcher Danny Jansen and all four infielders joined the meeting. Baumler initially thought he was being removed from the game.
Finish of the inning
After learning he would start the season in the bullpen, Baumler struck out Isaac Collins. The final pitch was a 96.8 mph fastball that ended the frame.
Back in the dugout he hugged Schumaker and received high-fives from teammates. Jansen tapped his mitt on Baumler’s chest as teammates celebrated.
Spring training performance
Baumler appeared in eight spring training games. He allowed one earned run and recorded 10 strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings.
He had been aiming to make his major league debut after never pitching above Double-A. The mound meeting turned into an in-game announcement of his roster fate.
Background and path to Texas
Baumler was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the 2020 amateur draft. He was drafted out of high school in Iowa and underwent Tommy John surgery soon after.
He pitched in the Orioles system from 2022 through 2025. The club left him off its 40-man roster last fall.
Pittsburgh selected him in the first round of the Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings in December. The Pirates then traded him to Texas on the same day.
A 24-year-old right-hander, Baumler called the moment unexpected. A Rangers pitcher discovered his roster status after a surprising mound visit during the game, a rare and memorable announcement.
