Kirk Jones to Direct Live-Action ‘Mr Benn’ Film Adaptation
Kirk Jones has signed on to write, direct and produce a live-action film adaptation of the UK children’s series Mr Benn. Casting is due to begin later this year. The team aims to start production in 2027.
Project timeline and reporting
Filmogaz.com first reported on the project in 2021. Casting will cover the title role and supporting parts. Production companies are coordinating schedules ahead of the planned 2027 shoot.
Producers and companies
- Branwen Prestwood Smith and Mike Prestwood Smith for 48 Films.
- David Barron for BeaglePug.
- Jack Whitehall for Jackpot Productions.
- Kirk Jones for One Story High.
Notable credits among producers
48 Films produced Kevin Macdonald’s 2021 thriller The Mauritanian. David Barron’s credits include the Harry Potter film series. Jack Whitehall joins as a producer through his Jackpot Productions banner.
Source material
The film will adapt David McKee’s animated series. The BBC first broadcast the show in 1971. Only 13 episodes were made, but the series remains popular 55 years after its debut.
The central character wears a suit and bowler hat. He visits a magical fancy dress shop. Each outfit launches him into a new adventure, often in different times and worlds.
Creative intent and direction
Jones said he loved Mr Benn as a child and wants to introduce the character to a new generation. He will direct the live-action Mr Benn film adaptation and also oversee the script and production.
He envisions a mix of humour and heart. The stories will travel through historical and futuristic settings. The character will resolve big problems with kindness and common sense.
Cast and production notes
Casting directors will search for the lead and supporting actors later this year. The producers hope to assemble the principal cast well before the 2027 production start. Further crew and location details will be announced in due course.
Family response
The McKee family said the project has long been important to them. Their father often spoke about seeing the character brought to life on screen. They welcomed Jones joining the team and look forward to revisiting Festive Road, where they grew up.
Jones’s recent work and accolades
Jones has directed six feature films. His credits include Nanny McPhee (2005) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016). His most recent film, I Swear, earned over £6 million at the UK and Ireland box office.
I Swear received five BAFTA film nominations. It won best actor for Robert Aramayo and best casting for Lauren Evans. Jones brings that commercial and awards experience to this adaptation.
