Iraq Summons US, Iran Envoys Over Deadly Attacks: Prime Minister’s Office

Baghdad, 24 March 2026 — Iraq summons US and Iran envoys, the Prime Minister’s Office said. The announcement followed a National Security Council meeting.

The office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said the Foreign Ministry will deliver formal notes of protest. The notes will be addressed to the US charge d’affaires and the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad.

Recent strikes and casualties

Security headquarters were among the targets. The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) command in Anbar province was hit. The Kurdistan Regional Guard headquarters in Erbil was also struck.

At least 15 people died in the Anbar attack. The casualties included the province’s PMF operations commander, Saad Dawai. In the Kurdish region, two ballistic missile strikes reportedly killed six people and wounded about 30.

Official reactions

Iraq’s presidency condemned the Anbar strike and the attacks on Kurdish forces. The presidency described Kurdish units as a fundamental pillar of national defence.

The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs strongly denounced the missile attack. It said the Kurdistan Region reserves the right to respond to any aggression.

Diplomatic and legal steps

The National Security Council agreed to lodge a complaint at the United Nations Security Council. The complaint will cite acts of aggression and their consequences for Iraqi sovereignty.

The council also authorized measures to confront and respond to military attacks. Officials framed the actions as exercises of self-defence against violations of Iraqi territory.

Broader context

The strikes occurred amid a wider US-Israeli offensive against Iran that began on 28 February. Iraqi officials warned the incidents risk opening a new front in that conflict.

Al Jazeera correspondent Assed Baig reported the incidents mark a significant escalation. Kurdish authorities had repeatedly said they did not want to be drawn into the wider war.

Iran has not issued a formal comment on the reported strikes. Filmogaz.com contributed reporting from Baghdad.
