Bryan Hodgson Named Head Coach of Providence Men’s Basketball Team
Providence has hired Bryan Hodgson to lead its men’s basketball program. He replaces Kim English after a 15-18 season.
Announcement and immediate plans
The school will formally introduce Hodgson at a Tuesday press conference. The move makes him the 17th head coach in the program’s history.
Hodgson said he is honored and excited to join the city and the team. He promised to build a program that reflects local pride. He emphasized toughness, discipline, and a relentless approach.
Coach Hodgson’s recent success
At South Florida, Hodgson won both the regular-season and conference tournament titles. He was named the American Athletic Conference coach of the year in his lone season there.
The Bulls finished 25-9 and earned an 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They lost in the opening round to Louisville.
Career record and prior roles
Hodgson, 38, owns a 70-37 career record. He guided Arkansas State to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2023-25.
Before his head coaching roles, he served as an assistant at Alabama from 2019 to 2023. He was also on Buffalo’s staff from 2015 to 2019.
Endorsements and coaching style
Alabama coach Nate Oats praised Hodgson as a proven winner and rising star. Oats highlighted Hodgson’s modern, high-octane, and hard-playing style.
Those close to Hodgson say his brand of basketball emphasizes speed, physicality, and strong defense.
Local ties and program context
Hodgson grew up in New York and played at Jamestown Community College from 2005 to 2007. He inherits a Providence roster and fan base eager for renewed success.
English finished his Providence tenure with a 48-52 record. Under English, the Friars did not reach the NCAA Tournament or post a winning Big East record.
English had succeeded Ed Cooley, who reached seven NCAA tournaments in 12 seasons before leaving for Georgetown after the 2023 campaign.
