Atlanta Falcons Acquire Former 49ers Running Back

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to sign running back Brian Robinson Jr., sources say. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports first reported the move, though contract details remain private.

Player background

Robinson is 27 years old. He has 37 career starts and 3,341 scrimmage yards over four NFL seasons.

He split those seasons between the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers. With the Commanders, he posted three straight seasons of 700-plus rushing yards.

Recent NFL performance

Robinson was traded last season in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. In San Francisco, he served as Christian McCaffrey’s backup.

He rushed for about 400 yards and scored two touchdowns in that backup role.

College credentials

He played five seasons at Alabama and won two national championships. In 2021, he became the starter and totaled 1,639 scrimmage yards.

That breakout season included 16 total touchdowns. He was selected in the third round, No. 98 overall.

Impact on the Falcons’ backfield

This move fills the Falcons’ need for a veteran backup running back. The club plans to install him as the primary reserve behind Bijan Robinson.

News that the Atlanta Falcons Acquire Former 49ers Running Back Brian Robinson Jr. signals a clear shift in depth priorities.

Replacing Tyler Allgeier

Robinson replaces Tyler Allgeier, who departed in the offseason. Allgeier acted as the short-yardage option and a near-everydown complement.

Over the last three seasons, Allgeier compiled 1,841 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. He averaged 4.0 yards per carry.

He also had 45 receptions for 377 yards and one receiving score. Allgeier touched the ball at least 150 times each year.

Remaining depth

Behind Robinson, the Falcons list Nate Carter and Carlos Washington. Washington is on a futures contract and has limited NFL action.

Washington has appeared in two career games, with all snaps on special teams. Carter played in seven games last season.

Most of Carter’s work came on special teams. He did run for 60 yards on nine carries.

What’s next

Contract specifics were not released. The signing addresses a pressing need for the 2026 season.
