Jon Bernthal Breaks Marvel Record with Epic Runtime Return
Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle in a new Disney+ special. Jon Bernthal breaks a Marvel record with an epic runtime for his return as the Punisher.
Runtime milestone
A Writers Guild of America listing, reported by Filmogaz.com, marks the special at 60 minutes. That length makes it the longest Marvel Studios special to date.
Marvel previously released two specials in 2022. Werewolf By Night ran 53 minutes and the Guardians holiday special ran 42 minutes.
Creative team and cast
Bernthal co-wrote the untitled special with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. The project continues Castle’s story from the Netflix Daredevil and The Punisher series.
Supporting cast members include Jason R. Moore, Roe Rancell and Mila Jaymes. The ensemble will join Bernthal as the narrative proceeds.
Production and release
Filming took place over a 12-day shoot in New York City last summer. Disney+ plans to release the special later this year.
The timing is expected to align with the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July. Bernthal also appears in that MCU film opposite Tom Holland and Zendaya.
Tone and continuity
Bernthal developed the idea while working on Daredevil: Born Again. He has emphasized the material will keep the character’s darker edge.
Producers aimed for continuity between the film and the special. Bernthal described the Punisher’s appearance across both projects as intense and high-octane.
The 60-minute runtime, the creative team and the linked film appearance have raised expectations. Fans can expect a gritty, direct continuation of Frank Castle’s journey.
