Sudan Hospital Strike Kills 64, WHO Reports
At least 64 people died in a strike on a hospital in East Darfur last Friday. The count included at least 13 children.
At least 89 people were wounded. The Al Daein Teaching Hospital was left non-functional, according to the World Health Organization.
Casualties and facility damage
WHO reports confirm 64 fatalities in the hospital attack in Sudan. Medical staff and patients were among the victims.
The organization also says the strike caused severe damage to services. The facility can no longer provide care locally.
Claims and denials
The Rapid Support Forces accused the army of carrying out the strike. The army has denied responsibility.
Two military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strike targeted a nearby police station. They said the hospital was not the intended objective.
Wider conflict context
Sudan descended into full-scale fighting in April 2023. The confrontations pit the regular army against the paramilitary RSF.
United Nations estimates place deaths from the wider war above 40,000. Aid groups warn the true toll may be much higher.
Impact on healthcare
The WHO has recorded more than 2,000 deaths from attacks on medical facilities since the conflict began. The new hospital strike adds to that tally.
International health officials have urged an immediate de-escalation. WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus called for an end to the suffering and for safe access for humanitarian aid.
