“Ben Keaton, Renowned ‘Father Ted’ Actor, Passes Away”

Ben Keaton, a renowned ‘Father Ted’ actor, died unexpectedly at Lincoln County Hospital on Friday, March 20. He was best known for playing Father Austin Purcell in the series in 1995.

Television and film

His television credits included Casualty, Emmerdale, The Bill, Hububb, Doctors and Double Time. Film roles included East Is East and Love Bite.

Theatre, comedy and awards

He had a long stage career at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. His credits there included Animal Crackers, American Buffalo, Harvey, Cyrano de Bergerac and Hay Fever.

Keaton was a founding member of the improv group South Of The River. He also worked as a director at the Creative Academy.

He won the Perrier Comedy Award at the 1986 Edinburgh Festival. He earned two Manchester Evening News Best Actor awards and a Laurence Olivier nomination.

Personal life and tributes

A Dublin native, he is mourned by his ex-wife Polly, son Waldo and daughter Daisy. His brothers Des and Thom and sister Jeanette also survive him.
