Raków’s President Reveals Insights on Marek Papszun Ahead of Legia Match
Legia will host Raków on Sunday, with kickoff set for 20:15. The fixture carries special weight for Marek Papszun, who spent eight and a half years leading Raków.
From second division to champions
Papszun took charge in the second tier. He later guided the club to a Polish championship.
His autumn decision to seek a move to Legia triggered controversy. The departure did not mirror the celebratory send-off he had after the title, which featured a helicopter and confetti.
Turbulent fan reaction
Supporters expressed anger after Papszun announced his intentions. During a Conference League match with Rapid Vienna they displayed a banner calling him a Judas.
Raków president Wojciech Cygan said the message clearly affected the coach. Cygan noted that Papszun had built a strong reputation over many years.
Negotiations and the KFC meeting
Cygan, previously chairman of the supervisory board and a trusted associate of owner Michał Świerczewski, led talks with Legia. He described the period as full of twists and reversals.
Legia’s first offer was judged unacceptable. Canal+ commentator Krzysztof Marciniak called it “extremely insulting.”
Only one in-person discussion took place between Cygan and Legia’s director of football operations, Fredi Bobic. The meeting happened in a KFC halfway between Częstochowa and Warsaw, after the planned restaurant was closed.
At one point Legia announced it had withdrawn from the pursuit. Raków later returned to negotiations and agreed to terms that improved on the initial proposal.
Coaching timeline and sporting fallout
Legia dismissed Edward Iordănescu and installed Inaki Astiz as interim coach. Astiz began with a 1:1 away draw at Widzew and then presided over poor form.
Legia struggled to choose between waiting for Papszun and appointing immediately. Three matches before season end, the club leaned towards hiring a coach “now.”
Ultimately Legia failed to find a long-term solution quickly. The side lost three decisive matches late in the campaign, including two against Piast Gliwice and a key game with Noah.
By contrast, Raków stabilized under Papszun. After an immediate 1:3 home defeat to Piast, the team recorded five straight wins.
Staff moves
Papszun took several trusted staff members to Legia. The group included Michał Garnys, Artur Węska, Paweł Frelik and analyst Łukasz Cebula.
Cygan said he expected three of the four names from the start. The staffing choices were part of the transfer discussions.
Relations, reflections and the match ahead
Cygan described his relationship with Papszun as professional and without personal animosity. He said Papszun sent congratulations when Cygan returned as president.
Cygan plans to attend the Warsaw match and said he will offer a handshake. He added that he does not hold any ongoing conflict with the coach.
Cygan compared Legia’s troubles to GKS Katowice’s recovery. He pointed out that GKS sit seventh, two points shy of fourth, and reached the Polish Cup semi-final. The remark underlined Cygan’s view of Legia’s deeper problems.
Raków’s president revealed insights about Marek Papszun ahead of the Legia match during our conversation. He stressed that Papszun remains pragmatic and focused on earning three points.
Papszun missed recent training due to illness. He is expected to lead his team from the bench on Sunday.
