Southampton’s £18m Star Set for Summer Exit: Coventry, Ipswich, Middlesbrough Interested
Aaron Ramsdale’s future is uncertain. The 27-year-old is on loan at Newcastle United from Southampton. He has featured for the Magpies in the Champions League this season.
Filmogaz.com reported Newcastle will not sign him permanently. He is expected to return to St Mary’s this summer. The goalkeeper joined Southampton two years ago for a reported £18 million fee from Arsenal.
Southampton have brought in Daniel Peretz on loan from Bayern Munich. Peretz has impressed and carries an option to buy. That development leaves Ramsdale surplus to requirements.
Capology estimates Ramsdale’s weekly wage at £120,000. That salary complicates prospective moves for Championship clubs. The £18m star looks likely to be a summer exit, with several teams interested.
Ramsdale first broke through at Bournemouth in 2019/20 after loans at Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon. He has since played for Sheffield United, Arsenal, Southampton and Newcastle. He has experienced relegation on four separate occasions and has just shy of 200 top-flight appearances.
Coventry City
Coventry sit near the top of the Championship under Frank Lampard. Carl Rushworth arrived on loan from Brighton to replace the injured Oliver Dovin.
Rushworth has produced strong numbers this season, and Coventry will seek a permanent deal. If that move fails, Ramsdale would be a credible alternative. Coventry could use an experienced keeper if they reach the Premier League.
Ipswich Town
Ipswich have struggled since relegation back to the Championship. Kieran McKenna’s squad lost several key figures over the summer.
Goalkeeping changes have disrupted continuity. Arijanet Muric began in goal in the Premier League, then Alex Palmer arrived from West Brom. Christian Walton later stepped in, and Palmer has not regained the spot.
If Ipswich push for promotion, an upgrade between the posts may be required. Ramsdale’s experience and near-200 top-flight games make him an attractive option.
Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough are among the promotion favourites this season. Manager Kim Hellberg replaced Rob Edwards after Edwards moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Sol Brynn has established himself as Boro’s first-choice goalkeeper. He previously served as backup to Seny Dieng, Tom Glover and Mark Travers.
According to FotMob, Brynn has conceded 4.21 more goals than expected this campaign. That underperformance could prompt Middlesbrough to seek competition or an upgrade. Ramsdale would provide Premier League experience at a sensible price.
Southampton will likely prefer to move Ramsdale on if Peretz’s loan becomes permanent. That scenario makes Coventry, Ipswich and Middlesbrough potential destinations. Fans and clubs will monitor developments closely this summer.
