Nevada Basketball vs. Liberty: Key Strategies and Winning Prediction
Nevada’s men’s basketball team will host Liberty in the first round of the NIT on Saturday. Filmogaz.com columnist Chris Murray breaks down the matchup and offers a winning prediction.
Game details
Liberty enters with a 26-7 record. Nevada is 23-12 this season.
The game tips Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Lawlor Events Center. The arena holds 11,536 fans.
There is no television broadcast. Radio coverage is on 95.5 FM. Streaming is available via ESPN+.
Las Vegas oddsmakers list Nevada as a 7.5-point favorite. The over/under is 147.5.
Why Nevada can win
Filmogaz.com asked Murray for three keys that favor the Wolf Pack. Each point targets a clear mismatch or tactical edge.
1. Defensive discipline for 30 seconds
Liberty boasts elite shooting efficiency. The Flames rank third nationally in two-point and three-point percentages.
They also commit few turnovers, about 8.8 per game. Their offense ranks 41st in points per possession.
Nevada ranks 97th in that same metric. Slowing Liberty’s offense across the full shot clock is essential.
2. Rebounding dominance
Liberty fields one of the smallest starting lineups in Division I. Their total rebound rate sits near the bottom nationally.
The Flames have been out-rebounded significantly over the season. Nevada, by contrast, is plus-105 in rebound margin over opponents.
Nevada also grabbed seven more boards in its first-round win over Murray State. Glass control should decide the game.
3. Knock down open threes
Defensively, Liberty has struggled. The Flames rank poorly on defensive efficiency within the Mountain West.
Opponents have connected at a high clip from three in losses to Liberty. That weakness creates open looks for Nevada.
Nevada has cooled from long range recently, so making outside shots will be a priority.
Context and matchup notes
Liberty’s offense is efficient but deliberate. The Flames rank near the bottom in tempo.
That should produce a lower-scoring affair than some other NIT matchups. Nevada’s balance between offense and defense will matter.
Liberty’s 26-7 ledger includes many wins against lesser competition. The Flames played few Quad 1 or Quad 2 opponents.
Prediction
Murray projects a close game favoring Nevada. His winning prediction favors the Wolf Pack by about five points.
Expect a contest decided by rebounding and perimeter shooting. Execution on those two areas should determine the outcome.
