Essential Guide: What to Know Before Reading Half Marathon

Essential Guide: What to Know Before Reading Half Marathon

More than 10,000 runners will take part in a single-lap half marathon that begins at Green Park Business Park. The mostly flat, scenic course runs through the city centre and the University of Reading campus. The race finishes inside the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Event overview

The route covers the standard 13.1-mile half marathon distance on one loop. It passes landmarks such as The Oracle, Abbey Arch and the Maiwand Lion. Organisers expect heavy spectator turnout at the start and finish areas.

Arrival and the race village

Competitors are advised to arrive at the Race Village by 8am to avoid congestion. The first runners will cross the start line around 10.15am, with assembly beginning at about 9am.

The walk from the Race Village to the start takes 20–30 minutes. A clearly signposted kit tent will be available for bag drop.

Spectator locations

Spectators can watch sections of the 13.1-mile course across Reading. Key viewing points are near Green Park, the university grounds, under The Oracle, and at the stadium finish.

Road closures and travel impact

Extensive road closures will affect travel across the town during the day. Many central streets will be closed for several hours, typically between 9.30am and 12.45pm.

  • Basingstoke Road closed 9.50am–11.25am between Imperial Way and Callington Road.
  • A33 (southbound) closed 9.45am–11.30am around the Bennet Road gyratory.
  • A33 (northbound) closed 9am–3pm between Bennet Road and the IDR.
  • Longwater Avenue and Brook Drive closed from 6am until 3pm.
  • Mill Lane closed 7am–12.40pm along its length.

Traffic lights will briefly stop for approaching race leaders on Coley Avenue, to aid elite wheelchair competitors. Main routes such as the A4074 and A329 will remain open.

Parking and shuttle services

Pre-booked parking is required at Green Park (Longwater Avenue) or the Mereoak Park & Ride Blue car park. No parking is available at the start, finish, or the Race Village.

Shuttle buses (M1) run from Reading Station Southwest Interchange to the stadium. Services operate outbound from 7am until 9.40am, with return buses running until 3pm.

Finish, cut-offs and timings

Organisers set generous time limits that generally match the road closure timetable. Closures can remain in place for much of the day, often until around 4pm or 5pm.

Practical tips — Essential Guide notes on what to know
