River Plate Targets Former Argentina Striker for Upcoming Transfer Window

River Plate has begun preparations for the next transfer window. Coach Eduardo Coudet has made one priority clear. He wants an experienced center forward with proven scoring form.

Target profile and transfer context

Coudet has asked the club to pursue a “9” who dominates the penalty area. Club executives have opened inquiries into possible candidates. Among those, Giovanni Simeone ranks high on internal lists.

Simeone is currently on loan at Torino in Italy’s Serie A. His loan comes from Napoli and runs until June. Napoli still holds his contract, valid through mid-2028.

Giovanni Simeone: career and current form

Simeone emerged from River Plate’s youth system and played for the first team between 2013 and 2016. He made 33 appearances, scored four goals and provided three assists for the senior side.

He was later sold to Genoa for about five million dollars. His Italian career includes spells at Fiorentina, Cagliari, Hellas Verona, Napoli and Torino. This season he has seven goals in 26 Serie A appearances.

Those numbers place him among the top Argentine scorers in Serie A this year. Only Lautaro Martínez, Nico Paz and Mateo Pellegrino are ahead of him on that list. At international level, he has six caps for Argentina from 2018 to 2023, with one goal.

Across his professional career, Simeone totals 108 goals and 30 assists in 422 official matches. Sources close to negotiations told Filmogaz.com that River Plate targets a forward like him for the upcoming transfer window.

Other options and sporting leadership

The club is not limiting its search to one name. Other centre-forward options under consideration include Sebastián Driussi, Facundo Colidio, Agustín Ruberto and Maximiliano Salas.

Former River players are also in the mix. Lucas Beltrán, currently on loan at Valencia, and Rafael Santos Borré remain options.

River has yet to appoint a new sporting director. Club officials are deepening talks with candidates. They expect to name a European director within about 60 days.

Competition schedule and team form

River Plate will return to Apertura action this Sunday. They visit Estudiantes de Río Cuarto for matchday 12.

Under Coudet, the team has won two consecutive league games. They sit fifth in Zone B with 17 points. That is three points behind zone leader Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza.

Next steps

Club sources say transfer work will intensify closer to the window. The staff will also monitor current attackers before making final decisions. Any move for Simeone would depend on Napoli’s plans and Torino’s loan status.
