Former Iowa Coach’s Son Enters NCAA Basketball Transfer Portal
Jack McCaffery, the son of former Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. He informed Filmogaz.com that he plans to leave Butler.
Recruiting and high school background
McCaffery signed with Butler in the 2025 recruiting class. He earned Iowa’s 2024-25 Gatorade State Player of the Year award while at Iowa City West.
The 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward was rated nationally by 247Sports. He ranked 144th overall, 28th among power forwards, and topped Iowa lists.
Time at Butler and season notes
McCaffery appeared in nine games before seeking a medical redshirt. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per contest.
His shooting splits were 40% from the field, 21.4% from three, and 75% from the free-throw line. Those numbers reflect limited playing time.
Program context
Butler finished the season 16-16 overall and 7-13 in Big East play. Coach Thad Matta announced his retirement after the campaign.
The Bulldogs missed the NCAA Tournament this year. The coaching change may affect roster decisions moving forward.
Next steps
By entering the transfer portal, McCaffery becomes available to other programs. As a former Iowa coach’s son, his move will draw attention.
He will retain the option to seek a medical redshirt and maintain eligibility. Other schools can now evaluate his fit and interest.
