Donald Tusk Warns: Key Moves Could Lead Poland Out of EU
Poland’s prime minister stressed that EU membership remains vital for the country’s sovereignty, security and citizens’ freedoms. He warned that public debate over a referendum law could unintentionally spark a vote on EU withdrawal.
Warning on referendum debate and political risk
On Friday, during an interview on TVN24, he responded to a draft law in the Sejm. The bill would make formal procedures for leaving the EU more complicated.
Donald Tusk Warns: Key Moves Could Lead Poland Out of EU, he said, urging caution. He argued that opening procedural debate might shift public discussion toward holding a referendum.
He recalled the UK case, when about 70 percent favored remaining six months before the Brexit vote. Today, he noted, roughly 70 percent would support the UK’s return to the EU.
The prime minister added that if pro-EU sentiment weakens and anti-European forces win in 2027, legal safeguards will not stop an exit. He called on supporters of EU membership to preserve current public mood.
Health funding and the contribution pledge
The prime minister addressed planned changes by the National Health Fund. From 2026 the NFZ intends to alter reimbursement rules for four diagnostic tests.
He promised that the health insurance contribution will not be raised. He said the government will add 20–30 billion zloty to health funding this year.
His aim is a more balanced system. Funds should boost access and stability rather than feed automatic wage growth.
He declined to discuss individual medical salaries. He also said removing hospital caps and shortening waiting lists will require an agreement.
Maternity wards and service concentration
The prime minister commented on the wave of maternity ward closures across Poland. He noted Poland has one of the densest networks of such units in Europe.
When births and procedures drop, maintaining every facility becomes financially and organizationally unsound. He rejected the idea that closures are meant to provoke women.
He pledged to avoid internal conflict over these reforms. The government will seek practical solutions to balance service coverage and sustainability.
