Delta Denounces ‘Barbaric’ Attacks on Women at Ozoro Festival

The Delta State Government has strongly condemned reports of women being harassed and sexually assaulted. Delta denounces what officials called barbaric attacks on women during the Ozoro Festival.

The statement was released on Friday by Commissioner Charles Aniagwu. Aniagwu is Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information.

Calls for investigation and justice

He urged police and other security agencies to investigate the allegations without delay. Officials said perpetrators must be identified and prosecuted under the law.

Aniagwu said the government remains committed to protecting citizens, especially women and vulnerable groups. He also urged festival organisers and community leaders to improve security measures.

Police response

Delta State Police spokesperson Bright Edafe described the situation as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.” An investigation has begun, but no arrests were announced as of press time.

Circulation of videos and public reaction

Earlier reports said videos and claims circulated online showing assaults at the traditional event. Details about the festival remain unclear, and the allegations drew widespread condemnation.

The government reiterated a zero tolerance policy for gender-based violence. Authorities promised to pursue justice and prevent future abuses under the guise of culture.
