Inquest Reveals Final Moments of Manchester Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton Today
An inquest into the death of former world champion Ricky Hatton opened at Stockport Coroner’s Court on Friday, March 20, 2026. The hearing was scheduled to begin at noon.
Pre-inquest findings
A provisional cause of death of hanging was disclosed at a pre-inquest hearing. Coroners made that detail public ahead of today’s full proceedings.
Events before his death
Hatton, 46, was last seen by family on September 12 and appeared well. He failed to attend a planned engagement the following day.
On the morning of Sunday, September 14, his manager Paul Speak went to Hatton’s home in Hyde, Tameside. Speak had been due to drive him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai. He found Hatton unresponsive.
Plans and personal struggles
Family said Hatton had plans for the future. He reportedly had his bags packed for a comeback fight in Dubai in December.
Hatton had previously spoken openly about mental health issues. He also disclosed struggles with alcohol, drugs, and past suicide attempts after retiring following a 2012 comeback.
Legacy and public reaction
The retired boxer was widely adored. Known as “The Hitman,” he was a proud Mancunian and a passionate Manchester City supporter.
Thousands lined the streets for his funeral at Manchester Cathedral. Celebrities and sports figures attended, including Liam Gallagher, Wayne Rooney, Tyson Fury and Tommy Fury. His brother Matthew and son Campbell carried the coffin.
