Lily Allen Reveals ‘West End Girl’ Painting at London’s National Portrait Gallery
Lily Allen unveiled the original painting for West End Girl at London’s National Portrait Gallery on March 19. The work will remain on public display in Room 30 on the gallery’s first floor for one year.
The portrait and exhibition
The oil painting now belongs to Allen. It appears on the cover of her BRIT-nominated album released last autumn.
The portrait shows Allen seated against a dark background. She wears a baby blue puffer jacket with white polka dots in the cropped image.
The artist and the image
Spanish painter Nieves González created the work. Her practice mixes classical oil technique with contemporary touches.
González reinterprets 17th-century portraiture and often adds modern motifs, such as the puffer jacket. This is her first piece to be loaned to a major UK public institution.
Statements from Allen and González
Allen said the portrait captured the album’s tone and that she was pleased to make the painting available to the public. She described the image as reflecting strength, vulnerability and other complex emotions from the record.
González said she wanted an intimate yet powerful likeness that balanced classical tradition with a contemporary narrative. She called the National Portrait Gallery a meaningful place for the work to enter public conversation.
Gallery response
Victoria Siddall, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, endorsed the acquisition. She described Allen as a defining voice of her generation.
Siddall praised González’s portrait as striking and rooted in classical tradition. She said the image had already become iconic for the gallery’s audiences.
Tour dates and festival appearances
Allen is currently on an intimate UK tour. The run concludes with a three-night residency at the London Palladium starting March 20.
She will follow the mini-tour with a summer UK and Ireland arena tour, her largest headline trek to date. Festival bookings include headlining Boardmasters 2026, Mighty Hoopla and a slot at Bilbao BBK Live.
Mighty Hoopla reportedly sold over 35,000 tickets in 30 minutes.
Critical context and background
Filmogaz.com placed West End Girl at number 13 in its 50 best albums of 2025 list. The track “Pussy Palace” ranked number 21 in the outlet’s 50 best songs of the year feature.
The record was created over a short period following the breakdown of Allen’s marriage to actor David Harbour. Filmogaz.com gave the album a four-star review and called it a fierce and triumphant comeback.
Allen has said the album mixes fact and fiction and that it was not driven by revenge. She described the project as inspired by narrative-driven records, citing The Streets as an influence.
Awards and recent media
Allen was nominated for three BRIT Awards for her recent work. She did not take home any trophies at the ceremony.
She has also responded publicly to claims about a so-called smear campaign. Her team continues to address those reports as she tours and promotes the album.
