Adidas Unveils Argentina and Mexico Away Kits for Men’s World Cup
Adidas revealed its away jerseys for nations competing at this summer’s men’s World Cup. The launch took place in Los Angeles. The collection draws heavily on 1990s design cues.
Launch details and design theme
The reveal happened at Lower Grand Tunnel in Downtown L.A. The event followed Adidas’ November release of the home kits. Twenty-five partner federations were represented at the launch.
Thirteen of those federations have already secured World Cup places. The range revives the trefoil logo last seen on international kits at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. That logo return informs much of the retro styling.
Visual motifs and shared elements
Many shirts use bold trims and patterned fields. A framed collar detail appears across several designs. Geometric and floral motifs are present in different national interpretations.
Mexico’s away kit
Mexico’s new away shirt departs from the famous green home jersey. The alternate design is mainly grey and white. It includes a subtle geometric pattern inspired by grecas from Mexican art and architecture.
The collar shows red and black trim. Mexico will open the tournament at Estadio Azteca on June 11. Their opponents will be South Africa, whose away shirt features green and gold stripes.
Argentina’s away kit
Argentina’s away strip is a dark, distinctive design. The base is black with swirling blue floral and plant motifs. This edition will likely be tied to Lionel Messi’s final World Cup appearance.
Italy and European play-offs
Italy have not yet qualified for the finals. They can secure a place via the European play-offs starting next week. Italy face Northern Ireland in a play-off semi-final next Thursday.
If they qualify, the away top will feature light-blue and white tones. The design draws on the smart suit jackets worn by past squads. There is gold detailing in the collar to acknowledge the nation’s four World Cup titles.
Other partners and remaining qualifiers
Jamaica already unveiled its Adidas away jersey last month. That shirt channels Bob Marley-inspired artwork. Jamaica must progress through the inter-confederation play-offs to wear it at the finals.
Next week Jamaica meets New Caledonia. The winner will face DR Congo for one of two final qualifying spots. Several other federations in the Adidas program will reveal final selections as qualification concludes.
