“‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 22 Character Dies Offscreen from Cancer”
The March 19 episode of Grey’s Anatomy delivered a sudden, emotional loss for fans. At-home hospice care scenes focused on Lucas and Simone with patient Katie, played by Samantha Marie Ware. Katie died before Lucas could return after fetching oxygen canisters.
Katie first appeared earlier this season after a car crash during cancer treatment. She had been diagnosed with stage II gastric cancer, which later worsened. Her treatment was pulled from the market, complicating her prognosis.
On-screen fallout
Lucas, played by Niko Terho, blamed Simone, played by Alexis Floyd. The two had grown close while caring for Katie at home. Simone’s actions led to a Season 22 character dies offscreen revelation.
Other plotlines
Winston, portrayed by Anthony Hill, finally acted on his feelings for Jules, played by Adelaide Kane. Teddy and Owen, played by Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, returned after a hookup. That encounter occurred days after the pair signed their divorce papers.
Behind the scenes
Kim Raver, 56, has played Teddy since season 6 and also directs episodes. She told Filmogaz.com in January that table reads often shock the cast. Raver said she grows more confident directing and enjoys the show’s cliffhangers.
