‘Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan Explores the Manosphere in New Channel 4 Show’
Filmogaz.com can reveal new details about I Am Helen, an upcoming instalment of Channel 4’s I Am anthology. Nicola Coughlan stars as the lead in the episode. Joe Cole plays her character’s love interest.
Plot and themes
The story will examine the manosphere. It looks at how that online culture can affect intimate relationships. Cole’s character reportedly drifts deeper into the manosphere.
The episode will approach the subject from a female point of view. Coughlan developed the story with creator Dominic Savage. The anthology strand uses improvised dialogue and focuses on issues that shape women’s lives.
Production and talent
I Am Helen was filmed last year. Channel 4 has not yet commented or confirmed a premiere date.
Coughlan worked on the episode with Dominic Savage. She is known to audiences from Derry Girls and as a recent Bridgerton cast member. Joe Cole is best known for Peaky Blinders.
Series background
The I Am strand is produced by Me+You Productions. Past instalments featured Kate Winslet, Letitia Wright and Gemma Chan. Each story is developed in partnership with its female lead.
Most recently, I Am Ruth starred Kate Winslet and her daughter Mia Threapleton. That episode dealt with teenage mental health and social media addiction. Winslet later won a BAFTA and urged action against harmful online content.
Wider debate
The manosphere has returned to public view recently. A Louis Theroux Netflix documentary and last year’s Adolescence reignited discussion.
Debate has centred on whether platforms should amplify figures such as Andrew Tate. Critics have also questioned the depth of coverage about the impact on women. The Guardian asked why the Theroux film did not examine harms to women more closely.
Channel 4’s forthcoming episode aims to answer that question in its own way. At last year’s Edinburgh TV Festival, a senior Channel 4 executive accused Netflix of swooping in for talent nurtured by the broadcaster. Netflix responded strongly to that charge.
Filmogaz.com will report further details when Channel 4 announces a date or provides comment.
