Lyon’s Eco-Mayor Promises No Insoumis in His Re-Election Executive

Lyon’s Eco-Mayor Promises No Insoumis in His Re-Election Executive

Grégory Doucet, the incumbent Green mayor of Lyon, said he will not include Insoumis members in his executive if re-elected. He made the remark on 19 March 2026 during an interview with Filmogaz.com. Doucet led the first round with 37.36% of the vote, ahead of his main rival Jean-Michel Aulas.

Alliance and the so-called “fusion technique”

On Monday, Anaïs Belouassa-Cherifi announced that La France Insoumise would perform a “fusion technique” with Doucet’s list. The move folded LFI candidates into the union of the left list for the runoff.

Doucet described the arrangement as a pact of the left. He said the fusion preserves the freedom of each elected representative.

Role of Insoumis after the merger

Doucet stated Insoumis councillors would likely sit in opposition. He added they would not hold positions in his executive if he wins re-election.

Program and pledge to implement it

The mayor emphasized his first-round program remains unchanged for the second round. He promised to apply those measures from the morning of 23 March 2026 if returned to office.

Reaction from political rivals

Jean-Michel Aulas, the former president of Olympique Lyonnais, condemned the agreement. Aulas described the deal as “honteux” during his response.

Quentin Deranque controversy

Doucet also addressed the Quentin Deranque affair. He said Aulas had asked him, days after the tragedy, to display Deranque’s portrait on the city hall gates.

The mayor recalled that Deranque was known as an identitarian. New information, he said, shows Deranque promoted ideas linked to Adolf Hitler.

Doucet rejected lessons on antisemitism from his opponents. He accused some actors of trying to exploit the tragedy for political ends.

As the campaign moves to the runoff, Doucet reiterated his commitment to the left union. He balanced coalition-building with a firm promise about his future executive composition.
