Billy Porter Shares Emotional Health Update on TODAY After Sepsis Scare

Billy Porter, 56, described a near-fatal sepsis episode that left him in a coma for three days. The illness struck in September 2025 while he prepared to lead a Broadway revival of Cabaret.

Medical emergency and treatment

The problem began with a urinary infection that was not treated properly. The infection spread to his kidneys and caused kidney stones to become lodged in his urethra.

The bacteria entered his bloodstream, producing urosepsis. Doctors placed him on an ECMO machine to support his heart and lungs.

He spent three days unconscious. He also developed compartment syndrome in his leg, a condition that can cut blood flow to muscles and nerves.

Impact on the production

Porter had been scheduled for a 13-week run as the Emcee on Broadway. He had performed the same role in the West End earlier that year, from Jan. 28 to May 24, 2025, according to Playbill.

His withdrawal forced the fall production to end its run early. Marisha Wallace had been cast as Sally Bowles opposite him before his hospitalization.

Public statement and recovery

On March 17, Porter spoke publicly about his ordeal. He appeared on TODAY and offered an emotional health update after the sepsis scare.

He called survival “a gift” and said he is on the road to complete recovery. He said the experience remains emotional but inspiring.

Medical context

Sepsis occurs when the body’s response to infection becomes life-threatening. It can cause low blood pressure and organ damage, experts warn.

The ECMO machine temporarily takes over heart and lung function. Compartment syndrome is most common in the legs and can require emergency care.

Work and future plans

Porter is a writer, director, fashion icon, and veteran screen and stage actor. He said surviving the crisis has sharpened his creative urgency.

His children’s book, Songbird in the Light, was released on March 17. He also said he plans to expand his production company and develop original work.

Porter described his artistic goals as rooted in love, hope, and joy. He added that the health scare has made him more determined to create meaningful projects.
