Yanbu Under Attack: Gulf’s Sole Oil Lifeline Amid Hormuz Closure
Saudi Arabia’s SAMREF refinery in Yanbu was struck in an aerial attack, Reuters reported.
The facility is a joint venture between Aramco and ExxonMobil. An industry source said the damage was minimal.
Yanbu’s role in Gulf oil exports
The port of Yanbu has become a key export outlet since Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz late last month.
The strait normally carries about one fifth of global oil flows. With the Hormuz closure, alternate routes are vital.
Some observers described the event as “Yanbu Under Attack”. The refinery now forms part of what analysts call the Gulf’s sole oil lifeline amid the Hormuz closure.
The United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah port is the other main outlet. Fujairah has also faced attacks and suspended some operations.
Regional strikes, warnings and damage
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued evacuation warnings for several oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar.
The evacuation notices included the SAMREF site. Authorities and industry sources reported heightened threats across the region.
Tehran’s strikes followed Israeli operations on Iran’s South Pars gas field. Those actions marked a major escalation in the wider conflict.
QatarEnergy said Iranian missile attacks on Ras Laffan caused extensive damage to its core LNG processing complex.
Saudi forces intercepted and destroyed four ballistic missiles launched toward Riyadh. The UAE halted operations at its Habshan gas facility after a drone interception.
Political fallout and responses
Riyadh warned it reserves the right to act militarily against threats from Iran. Officials said trust with Tehran has effectively collapsed.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan accused Iran of premeditated hostile actions. He blamed direct moves and attacks by regional proxies.
Saudi Aramco had not issued a public comment on the Yanbu incident, according to the Reuters account relayed by Filmogaz.com.
Market implications
The greater Gulf region supplies roughly 31 percent of the world’s oil output. It also produces between 8 and 17 percent of global gas.
Disruptions at export hubs like Yanbu and Fujairah threaten global supply. Market participants warned of an emerging energy crisis.
It remained unclear whether crude loadings were fully operational on Thursday after the latest attacks. Analysts will watch export flows closely.
