AEMET Elevates Tenerife Weather Alert to Orange with 100 km/h Winds

AEMET has raised weather warnings as Storm Therese strengthens over the Canary Islands. Orange alerts now cover parts of Tenerife and La Palma for Thursday, 19 March.

Alert upgrade and timing

AEMET upgraded several islands from yellow to orange on Tuesday. The change applies from 9:00am on Thursday, 19 March.

Winds and high-altitude hazards

Forecasters expect gusts up to 90 km/h in northern Tenerife and wide areas of La Palma. Around Mount Teide, south-westerly winds could exceed 100 km/h, creating serious risks in exposed locations.

AEMET has elevated Tenerife’s alert to orange, with south-westerly gusts possibly topping 100 km/h.

Yellow warnings across the rest of the islands

Other islands remain under yellow warnings. Wind gusts up to 80 km/h are forecast in several zones.

  • Tenerife: metropolitan area, east, south, and west.
  • Gran Canaria: north, summits, east, south, and west.
  • La Gomera and El Hierro: island-wide.

Sea and coastal conditions

Yellow coastal alerts are active, especially on Tenerife’s north coast, La Palma and El Hierro. Wave heights of four to five metres are expected from strong north-westerly swells.

Situation change and safety advice

The situation worsened since Wednesday, when only yellow warnings were in force. Forecast gusts then reached 70–80 km/h.

Authorities urge residents and visitors to take extra precautions and to follow official guidance. Local services are monitoring the storm closely.
