Emergency Alert in Prince George Forces Evacuations After Gas Leak

The City of Prince George has issued an evacuation order after a reported Gas Leak in parts of the city, directing residents inside the evacuation zone to leave immediately and seek shelter at a designated reception centre.

Gas Leak Prompts Immediate Evacuation Order

An evacuation order was issued early Saturday evening in response to what the city described as a gas leak that poses a threat to human life. The impacted area has had the power shut off while emergency crews work on mitigation.

Officials have said Prince George Fire Rescue Crews, RCMP and Fortis crews are all on site addressing the situation.

Who Is Affected And Where To Go

Residents of Carrier Place, Carrier Avenue and Explorer Crescent who are inside the evacuation zone have been told to stay out of the area. Homes that are no longer included in the evacuation area may return home.

A BC emergency alert ordered residents in areas north of Fifth Avenue, east of Tabor Boulevard and west of Voyageur Drive to vacate. Evacuees are being directed to the Zion Lutheran Christian Church at 180 Tabor Boulevard, where emergency management staff and other personnel are on site to assist.

Anyone unable to evacuate is asked to call 9-1-1. People can register for Emergency Support Services (ESS) for short-term basic support online.

Emergency Response Underway And What Comes Next

Fire rescue crews, RCMP and utility crews remain at the scene working to mitigate the underground issue believed to be the source of the gas leak. With power shut off in the affected area, the city has said it will provide further updates when they are available.

Officials continue to manage the reception centre and the on-site response. Residents should follow evacuation orders and the direction of emergency staff until authorities confirm it is safe to return.
