Ramadan 2026: Selangor Sultan Urges Calm After Date Speculation Sparks Confusion
The Sultan of Selangor has warned the public against accepting unverified claims about the first day of Syawal as Muslims observe Ramadan 2026, calling for patience ahead of an official declaration. The palace said speculation over the date risks causing confusion and urged people to concentrate on worship in the closing nights of the month.
Official Announcement Set For March 19
Istana Alam Shah issued a statement on Friday, March 13, saying the Sultan disapproves of baseless assumptions and unfounded predictions about the Aidilfitri date. The statement made clear that the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal will make the formal announcement on Thursday, March 19, after obtaining the consent of the Malay Rulers in line with established practice.
Malaysia’s Moon-Sighting Practices And Local Authority
The palace reiterated that Malaysia follows its own established methods for determining the start of Islamic months. The Sultan noted that the rukyah (visual moon sighting) and hisab (astronomical calculation) approaches are used in an orderly and meticulous manner by the relevant religious authorities, and that these methods have long been accepted and agreed upon by the Conference of Rulers.
The Selangor Mufti Department explained that the beginning of an Islamic month depends on sighting the hilal, and on data about the moon’s position on the date of observation in a particular country. The palace cautioned that determinations made by other countries should not be compared with or taken as authoritative for Malaysia.
Focus On Worship During The Last Ten Nights
The Sultan urged Muslims not to become overly preoccupied with discussions about the Aidilfitri date to the detriment of religious observance. He emphasized the importance of the last ten nights of Ramadan, describing them as a highly valuable period for increasing acts of worship, prayers and seeking forgiveness.
Members of the public were encouraged to read and fully understand the statement issued by the Selangor Mufti Department as well as guidance delivered in Friday sermons on the matter, the palace said.
With the official declaration scheduled for March 19, authorities in Selangor have framed the response to speculation as both a matter of public order and religious propriety. Uncertainties about the exact date remain until the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal completes the consent process with the Malay Rulers, and the palace has asked for calm while that process concludes.
