Mississauga Plans Major Downtown Transformation, A ‘Once-in-a-Generation’ Change

Mississauga is poised for significant changes as the city council has endorsed a transformative vision for its downtown core. This plan covers 12 acres of city-owned land located along Princess Royal Drive, adjacent to Burnhamthorpe Road West and Confederation Parkway.

Key Components of the Downtown Vision

The ambitious project includes:

  • A 500,000-square-foot conference center
  • A 400-room hotel
  • A state-of-the-art music hub featuring a performance venue, recording studios, and a music school
  • A nine-storey office building
  • A 20-storey purpose-built rental apartment building with retail options

The design prioritizes pedestrian-friendly spaces, aiming to create a lively urban environment supported by light-rail transit. This redevelopment reflects Mississauga’s commitment to enhancing tourism, music, and economic growth.

Mayor’s Support and Future Plans

Mayor Carolyn Parrish expressed optimism about the project, describing the council’s endorsement as a pivotal moment for the city. She emphasized the potential of the new city center to establish Mississauga as a significant urban location.

“With proper management, we will create a city center plan that truly stands out,” said Parrish. “We’re no longer just a suburb.”

Economic Impact and Next Steps

The proposed redevelopment is expected to yield substantial economic benefits:

  • 28,000 new jobs
  • An estimated $1.7 to $2 million in annual municipal tax revenues
  • $4 billion in total economic output

While the total cost of the project remains undetermined, city staff will develop a comprehensive project plan, including technical analysis and financial strategies, to be presented by 2026.

Public engagement sessions are set to take place over the coming months, with city officials aiming to provide updates on the downtown transformation in June 2026.
