Senator Fetterman Condemns Trump’s “Ridiculous” Mail-In Voting Critique

Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania publicly criticized the SAVE America Act, a bill promoted by the Trump administration and some Republican lawmakers. He expressed his concerns about a shift in the GOP’s stance on mail-in voting.

Fetterman’s Critique of the SAVE America Act

During an interview with CBS News, Fetterman stated, “I don’t support it…in its current state.” The proposed legislation aims to require proof of citizenship and photo identification for federal elections. Additionally, President Trump has advocated for an amendment to ban mail-in voting.

Fetterman on Mail-In Voting

Fetterman described Trump’s criticism of mail-in voting as “ridiculous,” emphasizing its reliability. He noted successful mail-in voting examples from states like Ohio and Florida, which have all voted Republican in previous elections.

  • Fetterman referenced Act 77, passed in 2019, which legalized mail-in voting in Pennsylvania.
  • This legislation received substantial bipartisan support and was backed by Republican lawmakers at the time.

Fetterman recalled that Republicans in Pennsylvania had initially championed mail-in voting. In 2021, however, some of these same lawmakers filed a lawsuit aiming to overturn Act 77 after Trump’s criticism. This attempt failed when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court upheld the law in 2022.

Concerns about the Filibuster

Fetterman predicted that the SAVE America Act would “never pass” due to the Senate’s filibuster rule. Currently, blocking a bill requires 60 votes to end debate, despite only needing 51 votes for passage.

While campaigning in 2022, Fetterman and other Democratic candidates sought to eliminate the filibuster. However, he noted that Democrats now find themselves relying on it.

Support for Voter ID

Despite his opposition to the SAVE America Act, Fetterman acknowledged a significant portion of the American public supports voter identification laws. A survey by the Pew Research Center indicated that 83% of Americans favor requiring government-issued photo IDs for voting.

Fetterman stated, “If the Republicans would ever just make it showing basic state ID to vote, hey, I’m not going to tell 83% of Americans that they’re wrong, or that they are Jim Crow.”

Senate Majority Leader’s Views

On the same day, Senate Majority Leader John Thune indicated that the SAVE America Act lacked sufficient support to advance in the Senate. He stated, “There are no easy ways to do this. Believe me, we’ve examined all the options.”

Fetterman’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding voter ID laws and mail-in voting, as Republicans and Democrats navigate differing views on election integrity. For more updates, continue to follow Filmogaz.com.
