Tim Hortons Expels Ontario NDP Leader from Property
A recent news conference led by Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles faced unexpected challenges outside a Tim Hortons in Sault Ste. Marie. The event was abruptly moved to a sidewalk after the restaurant management instructed the party to leave the property. This incident occurred during a campaign aimed at addressing critical safety concerns related to northern Ontario highways.
Incident Details at Tim Hortons
The press event was scheduled outside the Tim Hortons located at 699 Trunk Road. However, franchise owner Rico Fata informed the NDP that any plans for using the location must receive approval from corporate headquarters. NDP spokesperson Christy Kheirallah clarified that the party had always intended to hold their conference outside and was aware of the restaurant’s policy.
Focus on Highway Safety Issues
Despite the relocation, Stiles and her team continued their campaign to highlight safety issues on Highway 11 and Highway 17. They aim to pressure the Ford government for much-needed improvements. Stiles emphasized the urgency, stating, “We need urgent solutions, and we know what those solutions are — we just need the government to have the political will to get it done.”
Legislative Actions Planned
Party house leader and Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof announced plans to introduce a motion when the legislature reconvenes. He aims to declare the modernization and expansion of Highways 11 and 17 as a “project of provincial significance.” Vanthof insisted that for the government to disregard the highways as significant would reveal a lack of genuine concern.
Highway Closure Statistics
Vanthof highlighted alarming statistics regarding highway closures. In 2024 alone, Highway 11 was closed 363 times, while Highway 17 experienced 886 closures. Each closure disrupts the flow of millions of dollars in goods and services. “The loss of life does not seem to impact this government. But I hope finances will,” he remarked.
NDP Campaign Tour Across Northern Ontario
- Stops include Thunder Bay, Timmins, and Sudbury.
- Other MPPs involved: Guy Bourgouin (Mushkegowuk-James Bay), Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong).
Stiles criticized the provincial government for its neglect of northern Ontario, noting the lack of action on previous private members’ bills related to highway improvements. This ongoing campaign aims to ensure that northern issues receive the attention they deserve from provincial leadership.
