Impact of Rising Global Oil Prices
The rising fuel costs coincide with escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted global supply chains, particularly through critical oil transit points like the Strait of Hormuz. Recent fluctuations in global oil prices demonstrated a significant drop, from a peak of $US120 to $US90 per barrel.
Government Response to Fuel Price Increases
In a press conference alongside the Prime Minister, Energy Minister Chris Bowen addressed the situation. He noted that government preparations for minimum stock obligations are effective and sufficient. Bowen emphasized that there should be no cause for panic among motorists, stating:
“We have enough diesel in Australia for our needs for the foreseeable future, and there is absolutely no need for panic.”
Bowen confirmed that discussions with industry representatives would continue to mitigate the effects of rising fuel prices.
