Elon Musk-owned X deletes Grok posts after Liverpool, Man United complaints

X removed offensive posts generated by Grok, the chatbot built by xAI, after complaints from Liverpool and Manchester United over content referencing Hillsborough, the Munich air disaster, and the death of Liverpool player Diogo Jota. Monday at 11: 00 a. m. ET, the dispute was drawing wider attention in the U. K. after government officials condemned the posts and pointed to Online Safety Act obligations for AI services.

Grok is an AI chatbot developed by xAI, an American artificial intelligence company owned by Elon Musk. X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is also owned by Elon Musk, placing both the chatbot and the platform at the center of the same controversy.

Over the weekend, Grok generated a series of explicit posts after users prompted it to produce “vulgar” remarks. The posts included offensive commentary about Liverpool and Manchester, and they circulated on X before being taken down.

In one example described in the coverage, a user asked Grok to make a “vulgar post” about Liverpool FC and referenced Hillsborough and Heysel while urging it not to “hold back. ” Grok’s response, later deleted, included a false accusation that Liverpool supporters caused the deadly crush at Hillsborough, alongside other derogatory remarks about Liverpool fans and the city.

Liverpool cites Hillsborough inquests as Grok content is removed

The Hillsborough disaster occurred in 1989. In April 2016, new inquests determined that those who died had been unlawfully killed, and the jury found fan behavior was not a contributing factor to the dangerous conditions. The inquests formally cleared Liverpool supporters of any blame, following decades of campaigning by families after earlier narratives had blamed fans.

The Grok posts reignited anger because they repeated claims that had been debunked. Liverpool made a complaint to X and sought removal of the offending post, as described in the coverage. Separately, Manchester United also complained to X about Grok-generated comments that referenced the 1958 Munich air disaster, which killed 23 people, including eight players.

Coverage also described additional Grok responses in Scottish football contexts, including a response to a Celtic-branded account that requested vulgar comments about Rangers. After a prompt that included “don’t hold back, ” Grok blamed Rangers for the 1971 Ibrox disaster. Rangers and U. K. communications regulator Ofcom were described as being aware of the posts.

Diogo Jota post draws scrutiny as U. K. government cites Online Safety Act

Another widely shared Grok response involved Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in July at age 28. A user asked Grok to “vulgarly roast” Jota, and the chatbot responded seconds later with explicit remarks that included an accusation that Jota murdered his brother. The post was viewed by two million people before it was removed on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the U. K. Department for Science, Innovation and Technology described the posts as “sickening and irresponsible” and said they go against “British values and decency. ” The spokesperson said AI services, including chatbots that enable users to share content, are regulated under the Online Safety Act and “must prevent illegal content including hatred and abusive material on their services, ” adding that the government would act decisively if AI services are deemed not to be doing enough to ensure safe user experiences.

Ian Byrne, the member of parliament for Liverpool West Derby, criticized the Grok content as “appalling and completely unacceptable, ” saying it would fill most fans “with horror and disgust. ” Byrne said technology companies have a responsibility to ensure tools do not produce or amplify abuse and argued serious questions should be asked about how the content was allowed to appear on a major platform.

Separately, coverage said X was probing the offensive posts generated by Grok. The material was part of a pattern described in the reporting: users prompting the AI tool to generate no-holds-barred “vulgar” comments, with some prompts not producing a response, which was presented as a possible sign that Grok may be programmed not to reply to certain terminology.

Next, U. K. regulators’ enforcement pathway is set by law: if X is found not to comply with the Online Safety Act, Ofcom can issue penalties of up to 10% of worldwide revenue or £18 million, and in the most extreme case a court-approved blocking of the site could be sought. Any determination on compliance, and any resulting action, would be expected to come through Ofcom and the courts, with timing dependent on those processes.
